The five artists presented are concerned with investigating visual constructs. Initiating these discussions is the research conducted by Professor John Kennedy on blind artist Eşref Armağan, which posits that the act of drawing and spatial perception are not limited to a command of vision. Aptly occupying spaces that regularly present modern and contemporary forms of visual production, the works collectively chart one amongst the many possible histories of visual representation, moving from an investigation of the Renaissance perspective to the appropriation of digital images from online platforms. The status of the image, its implied and projected meanings come under scrutiny as each artist seeks to understand how we see the world and ultimately how we choose to represent it, both individually and collectively. Running across all the projects is an awareness of the constructed nature of the image, which whether self or user generated, is simultaneously one-step embedded and removed from ‘reality’.  This in-between space that the image occupies is used as a site of commentary on issues related to information production and consumption, collective consciousness and individual histories.

MURAM Regional Museum of Modern Art (Cartagena) – Exhibitions and projects in relation to the construction of a visual tradition, therefore of a history of visuality, including artists such as Esref Armagan (Turkey), Nikolaus Schletterer (Austria), Wooloo,  Erlea Maneros Zabala (USA/Spain) and Michael Takeo Magruder (UK/USA) investigating the link between information production, consumption, ‘objectivization’and the physical space.

Professor John M Kennedy FRSC has extensively researched the artistic practice of Esref Armagan, please see John Kennedy page for an introduction to his research and to see Esref Armagan’s sketches.

MURAM will also potentially host one of M8 educational spaces and M8 info point.
