Old prison San Anton (Cartagena)
The works on display here deal with the unique history of the now defunct San Antón prison, whichonce housed political prisoners after the Civil War, and in its latter years, semi-free, third-gradeprisoners. Whether considering its “closed” or “open” state, each artist investigates the old prisonas a mediated reality between ‘free’ and ‘disciplined’ citizens. The complex contradictions of thisenvironment are not treated in isolation but connected to wider issues related to contemporaryliving. As such, the artists utilise San Antón as a site for questioning architecture based on aspectsof control, surveillance and embodied fictions. Conceiving the sphere of the media as one suchentity, the works critically address the media’s relationship with the exchange of knowledge, theconstruction of identities and collective histories, mass media consumption and propaganda.
This significant environment will host site specific A/V installations, exhibitions and performances.
Artists include: María Ruido (Spain); Danilo Correale (Italy); Ariel Richman (Germany/ Isreal/ South Africa); Filipa Cesar (Germany / Portugal), Thierry Geoffroy / Colonel ((Ageria/France/Denmark) , Abed Anouti (Denmark/Lebanon), Khaled Hafez (Egypt), Anders Eiebakke and Brumaria.
